Patricia I. Vasquez

Patricia Vasquez is the Latin America Team Leader at Energy Intelligence. For her USIP project she is investigating local level conflicts related to oil and gas exploration and development in Latin America. She examines how the recent increase in hydrocarbon development in the region risks exacerbating local unresolved conflicts, and challenges the stability of oil and gas producing countries. Her project focuses on Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Brazil.

Vasquez joined Energy Intelligence, a leading world research and information company on energy issues, in 2000. She also contributes regularly articles to the Economist Intelligence Unit and is a frequent guest on CNN (Spanish), Bloomberg and BBC to discuss energy issues in Latin America. From 1994 to 2000, she was an advisor on trade and sustainable development for the Industry Secretariat of Argentina and a member of the government team representing that country at the Mercosur Environmental Negotiations. During that period, Vasquez also worked as a congressional aide for Argentina’s National Congress on issues related to industry and trade and as a consultant for the World Resources Institute. She carried out extensive research on trade, environment and intellectual property rights at FLACSO (Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciensas Sociales) in Buenos Aires. From 1989 to 1994 she was a journalist, covering the civil war in Nicaragua for BBC and writing for Reuters, La Nacion (Buenos Aires) and El Cronista Comercial (Buenos Aires).

Vasquez holds an MA in international relations and international economics from School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University and a BA in journalism from the University of Florida.
